It is amazing to think they we are at the beginning of term 4 and yet another year draws quickly towards Christmas. Educationally, term 4 is extremely important as we have the shared goal of preparing our children/students for the following year as well as them being engaged in assessment for reporting.
To support your child’s learning homework has been modified to include activities that enhance concept understanding (revision) and therefore better prepare students for assessment. Concepts that are being explored this semester include:
As you can see it will be an extremely busy term where children will be challenged across the curriculum. If you have any questions related to the learning of your child please make contact the class teachers.
After what was a hectic first semester we start term three enthusiastic about tackling a variety of challenging learning adventures. Settling into our new classroom has been a process but the students have worked well to ensure that it is a great learning environment. Our literacy and numeracy rotations have started and students are being encouraged to engage in high level thinking across a wide variety of activities. In maths we investigate problem solving activities, number concepts, chance and data, measurement, space and patterns and algebra. Our literacy rotations incorporate guided reading, comprehension, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, grammar, and writing activities.
SOSE/Science
In the near future we look forward to sharing our innovative food products that we have designed in our advertising unit. Our challenge now is to develop an oral presentation that promotes the food product and support this with a detailed and professional poster.
Our next adventure in SOSE and Science is to explore, ‘Why is Australia like a smorgasbord?’ This will investigate Australia’s physical environments as well as the organisms that are dependent on these varying landforms.
This fun filled three-day camp is designed to allow students to practise overcoming challenges and working together as a team. Among the activities undertaken during these three days are rope courses, archery, flying foxes and canoeing, as well as social activities in the evenings such as plays and games.
Year six will be enjoying a fantastic camp experience at Coolum where they will participate in an array of challenging and entertaining activities. Some of these activities include beach games, mid ropes course, archery and raft building. At Hilder Road we value the camp experience and see it as an opportunity to build strong relationships.
The art that 5/6C and 5M have been involved in required students to look at a natural object and draw it from different perspectives as well as enlarging the object through sketch. As you can see, the final art pieces look absolutely superb.
Cooperation, consideration, positive communication and body language, team work, resilience, determination and trust are all concepts that are explored in our team building sessions. Through this process we emphasise the importance of respectful communication.
The unit of work being studied this term
is titled ‘My Product Rules’. It will focus on persuasive text and the
students will be given opportunities to critically evaluate existing packaging
and promotional materials and design their own packaging and promotional
materials for their own food product. Students will be required to create and
design a marketing campaign for their product. This will include a poster and an
oral presentation that will be filmed promoting their product.
Towards the end of the term family members will be invited to join the students for a culminating event that will display and celebrate their efforts.
In mathematics students will continue developing their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and processes in real-life situations. Our focus for Term 2 will be:
Whole numbers, common and decimal fractions and strategies used to solve problems
Equations, patterns and relationships
Length, area, volume, angles
Geometric features of 2D/ 3D shapes and constructing nets
The Science question that will lead our studies this term is titled ‘Is Every Day the Same?’ Through a range of investigations students will demonstrate their understanding and interpretation of seasons, the causes of day and night and of the phases of the moon.
On Tuesday 12th of May the Starlab, a portable planetarium, will be presenting to 5M and 5/6C students at school. This school incursion will support our science topic and will include an outdoor night observation of the night sky using telescopes and a green laser.
In addition to our regular weekly activities this term the Year 5 students will be involved in the National Assessment, NAPLAN, on 12th, 13th, and 14th of May. Year 6 students will be completing a QCAT (Queensland Comparable Assessment Task) in English during the first few weeks of the term.
We also look forward to Liona Davies (5M) and Jen Mould (5/6C), pre-service teachers from QUT, working with us in our classrooms this term.
