Year 3BC & 3G

Term 4 - 2009

For our final term this year, 3BC & 3G will be considering their personal environments. We will be looking at our place within that environment and how we can effect the balance within that environment depending on whether we act positively or negatively. As part of this study we will be taking a walk to Wittonga Park as part of the local environment and looking at how man impacts on this area.

Term 4 Parent Letter

Our environmental studies have led us to consider the difference between rights and responsibilities within the different places we spend time. This photo shows some of the results of our discussion about Rights and Responsibilities in the home.

3BC had their first trip to Wittonga Park where they practised taking photos and video footage in preparation for their Movie Maker presentation about the local environment

3BC and 3G have done some great artwork this term, some based on their environmental theme like the “Starry Skies” from 3G, also the 3BC Neighbourhood including houses for every member of the class.

We have also used natural items from our environment to make “Bark Pictures” using things we’ve found like bark, sticks, leaves, seeds, grass, even sand!

We also just did some art for fun, making “Reverse or Negative” pictures out of 2 different colours of cardboard.

Term 3 - 2009

This term, as it is the 40th Anniversary of the landing on the moon, we will be investigating the wonders of Space. We will be looking at the forces that hold our planets in place.  We will be studying rockets and the energy they require to leave the Earth’s atmosphere.  We will be investigating and exploring how rockets are propelled, through experimentation.

In the first few weeks, students will be creating, in groups, a large 3D project on the planets or rockets.  They will need to decide on the equipment needed to create this and bring in the items necessary from home.

Mid-way through the term we will be preparing talks which will be in preparation for the school public speaking competition in Term 4.  The children will choose their own Space related subject of interest from our studies throughout the term.

We will be creating some experiments and will need to collect:

Paper Cylinders (not toilet rolls), Poster Cylinders, 2lt drink bottles, 600ml drink bottles. Please ensure that these items are clean before the children bring them.

The CSIRO visit allowed all the children to explore things like gravity and what it's like to be an astronaut!

The CSIRO will be visited in week 4, Tuesday the 4th of August. They looked at Space related concepts with the children in a very hands-on and enjoyable way.

Term 2 - 2009

Term 2 sees Year 3 focussing their efforts on Indigenous Australia. This study will give us opportunities to acknowledge cultural diversity as well as consider alternate viewpoints and varying historical perspectives. Some of the activities we will be undertaking in our research are creating a Powerpoint Presentation collating all our discoveries, and presenting an oral either on a well known Dreaming story or some factual information about an aspect of Indigenous Australian life. We are also experimenting with different Indigenous inspired art ideas to brighten our classroom. Later in the term we will have a visit from a local aboriginal elder who will shed more light on Indigenous culture and answer many questions we have about aboriginal society.

Each day we continue our Literacy Rotations across both classes with the help of many dedicated parents.

Group work in the Year 3 classroom

In week 6 we were very fortunate to have a visit from Uncle Albert who is an Indigenous Elder from the Brisbane Area. He spoke to us for an hour about many topics such as the Stolen Generation, his early life living on an Aboriginal Mission and also about Bush Tucker and Indigenous Weapons.  We were so absorbed in his stories that the time just flew by.  We all wish that he could visit us again!
