Year 2S & 2/3B

Term 3

Our unit of study this term is an investigation into the wonders of space.

The mood has been set and handmade papier-mache planets now dangle from our rafters as enthusiastic students contribute and share their knowledge of our fascinating solar system.

We have had a fun filled session of hands on science activities presented by CSIRO. What FUN! We learnt Newton’s theory that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. We saw how a jet of air could propel a balloon in the opposite direction and were amazed at the distance a simple plastic bottle or rather a roof seeking missile, could travel under the force of air and pressure. We dressed up in spacesuits, took a trip to the moon in a fancy blue rocket and discovered constellations along the way. We set up situations that would be similar in space. We tested gravity and the effect on movement and weight. The Bee- Bot demonstrated direction and the planetary motion in space. More information downloading this PowerPoint Presentation.

This term students will compile a profile of the planet of their choice. Subheadings will include location, physical features, discovery and any other special features or facts.

An hour every Friday afternoon has become a truly social and interactive time for our students in Grade 2 and 3. Whilst participating in group activities, eg sushi making, photography, card and board games, crafts… productive and effective teamwork is helping form new friendships. We have some wonderful parent volunteers who have happily set aside this hour to assist with some of the activities. Thank you!

Term 2 - 2009

In Term 2 a student sparked our curiosity when she brought a caterpillar into class.  Later that day the caterpillar began to weave itself into a cocoon and we observed and discussed the changes taking place. So began our journey to explore our school gardens for further “little critters.”

Mini-beasts

The integrated unit of work this term will have a strong Science, English and Design and Technology focus.  We will be looking at insects in our local areas, observing and recording habits of mini-beasts.

Assessment tasks this term will include:

Voluntary Enhancing Activities:

On Tuesday 26th May, the classes will be experiencing “Mini-Beasts” in the Classroom.  We will be having a visit from a beekeeper who will cover pollination of fruit and vegetables, insect colony structure, life in a bee hive and beeswax and its use.  This will cost $6 per student.

Library lessons are on Tuesdays, PE on Wednesdays for both classes and again on Thursday for 2/3B. Please ensure correct PE clothes on these days.

If you have any skills, interest or resources that you feel may assist the children in working with their connected curriculum study, please contact the class teachers.
