This term our SOSE and ICT investigation is “What is your Island Dream – A futures study.” Working together in groups students will plan and construct their own island model, construct an Island Information Visitor postcard and present a group presentation on the features and landforms of their island.
Both Year One classes will also be participating in the making of eco-friendly planes out of recyclable materials for a static display in the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. Two overseas artists require 7000 planes from Queensland school children and Hilder Road State School will be participating.
Swimming lessons are on Mondays and the Reading Friends Program will continue until Week 7 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30 in the classroom. See some of the photos below of the Reading Friends Program in action.
Please feel free to contact either Year One teacher if you have anything you wish to discuss about your child or our class.

Welcome back to school for Term Three! This term will see a focus on science and technology. Through a series of investigations the children will begin to develop an awareness and appreciation of how science is a part of everyday experiences and see the place of science in people’s work and community lives.
Science has applications in daily life, including at home, at school, at work and in leisure time.
What worked well, what did not work and how would you do it next time?

In Term 2 the children in Year One will investigate and develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. Understanding how camping and enjoying the outdoors has social, physical and emotional benefits will also be explored through an outdoor camping day and visits from the ‘Starlab’ astronomy team and Frank Manthey ‘The Bilby Man’.
Through this investigation the children in Year One will endeavour to answer the question - What can we learn from nature?
Our main focus in English will be identifying and collecting information and evidence from narratives and familiar sources. Through focus lessons, small group activities and literacy group rotations, students will be encouraged to reflect on and identify values associated with fairness and protecting the environment. Each week we will share a text or Big Book on different subjects and topics related to our study.
Essential Learnings in The Arts will be addressed through the children’s participation in an art process called 30 Days of Drawing. The children will use observational skills and persistence to become more confident artists developing language skills, creativity and awareness of art – line, shape, pattern, colour, shading and perspective.
Our ‘artist in residence’ Mr Rigby has also come in to visit and has shown us some of his beautiful paintings and has given us lots of tips and tricks to help us become better artists.
In Science the focus will be features of landscapes and environmental food webs.
Essential Learnings in Mathematics will be addressed through a combination of whole class lessons, manipulation of concrete materials, small group rotations and in-class computer software programs. Throughout the term the students will also have the opportunity to use the Mathletics and Rainforest Maths computer programs that can be accessed from home as well.
Major assessment tasks this term will include:
A Reflection on the Starlab visit
A Portfolio of 30 Days of Drawing
A Writing Task
A Technology Task
A Research Task – Kidspiration food web
A Mapping Task – representing features on a simple map.

We had a great start to school last week with lots of smiley faced, eager learners. Some of the activities your child has been involved in are:
Literacy and Numeracy rotations;
Learning letter shapes and sounds;
Painting pictures from The Very Hungry Caterpillar;
Lots of shared reading; and
Negotiating our Year 1 classroom courtesies, rewards and consequences.
Parent and grandparent helpers are always welcome to help with literacy activities on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings between 9 and 10. Put your name on the helper’s roster on either of the two fridges in the classroom.
A surprise package arrived this week from Jo the clown. He has recently inherited a circus and wants all the children in Year 1 to help him research about circuses. We will consult with experts and also look at books, posters, websites and videos. When we are ready we will put on our Year 1 circus show.
