The Year 4 classroom is a very creative room. The children have written Haiku and Diamante poems. The poems were shared with their peers. The students selected a poem to recite as part of their speaking and listening program and had the opportunity to audition for the Annual Speaking Competition in November.
This term we have used recycled materials to construct airplanes (that will be displayed at GOMA) and illustrated world myths and mysteries (including Medusa). We are also studying unexplained world mysteries and will map their location on a world map.
The students have been developing an awareness of using reliable websites for research during lessons with our Information, Communication and Technology teacher, Mr Collins.
4P and 4W have developed their drawing and presentation skills. Through our negotiated curriculum on Friday afternoons each student has set an individual goal in the area of visual arts.
This term, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of man landing on the Moon, the Year Four classes are learning all about the Moon. We are filling out a Moon Phase Calendar to plot the Lunar Cycle and record data.
Our unit began with the children creating a word wall filled with many and varied words to do with space. These words have come in very handy when writing about the Moon.
In Art / Technology the children have created their own rocket ships using a variety of recycled resources. They have also illustrated a Chinese Moon Myth using coloured pencils.
Each child in the class has chosen an astronaut or cosmonaut to research and will be presenting this information as a biography. Children are also working in small groups to investigate research questions about the Moon and its effects on the Earth.
This term we will be doing lots of hands on maths, specifically with geoboards, tessellating shapes and symmetry.
This term the Year 4s are learning all about the history of The Gap. We are researching how life has changed and how technology has impacted on our daily lives. To begin our unit of work we had a visit from Mr and Mrs Hilder who shared stories from the past. Mr and Mrs Hilder came dressed in olden day clothing and showed us many artifacts and memorabilia of days gone by. Many of the artifacts had been handed down through generations.

Watch this space for recounts of Mr Hilder’s visit and for pictures of artifacts that you may be able to identify.
Let’s see how you go identifying these 3?
This term also sees the beginning of the school camping program with the Year 4 children heading off on the first camp of their schooling life. We will be going to Underwater World overnight and the children will be sleeping in the tunnel under the sharks.
We have had some other very interesting visitors in our classroom this year. One of those was when Jack brought in his pet snake Jodie for us to meet.
We’ve had a fantastic start to 2009 in Year Four. Term 1 is a very busy time getting all our routines and rules established and settling back into school after our long and enjoyable break. The social skill of ‘Anti-bullying’, and the Habits of Mind ‘Managing Impulsivity’ and “Learning Continuously” have been our focus for the first couple of weeks and have promoted much discussion.
Our
classroom is starting to brighten up with some very colourful artwork displayed
where we have used either warm or cool colours to decorate our names. The
students have introduced themselves with a sample of art with their
self-portrait, Likes, Dislikes and Happy Experiences. These look great!
We
started the term by having a look at Australia Day through many interesting
activities and discussions. Our current novel is “Blabbermouth” by Morris
Gleitzman which is a humorous fiction book with themes on managing impulsivity,
bullying, school and family life, disabilities, friendship, tolerance and
understanding.
Later in the term we will be starting a science unit based on the Essential Learnings of ‘Life and Living’ and ‘Earth and Beyond’. More on that later.
We would like to thank all the wonderful parents who turned up to our parent evening. It was great to see such an interested group.
